Most business owners understand the importance of protecting their data, systems and customers. But security isn't just about having antivirus software or a firewall in place. It's also about the everyday practices that keep your business protected. Here are three areas SMEs should regularly review. **1. User access and account security** Do you know exactly who has access to your business systems? Over time, employees change roles, people leave, and external suppliers come and go. If access permissions aren't reviewed regularly, former employees or third parties may retain access they no longer need. Weak or reused passwords can also increase the risk of unauthorised access. **What should you check?** - Remove access promptly when employees or suppliers no longer need it. - Enable multi-factor authentication wherever possible, particularly for email and administrator accounts. - Review who has administrative privileges and apply the principle of least privilege. - Make sure employees know how to recognise suspicious emails and login requests. **2. Devices and software that fall behind** A business may have strong security tools in place, but an overlooked laptop, outdated application or unpatched server can still introduce vulnerabilities. As businesses grow, it becomes harder to keep track of every device and software application in use. If your business experiences a ransomware incident, accidental deletion or system failure, you'll need to know that your data can be recovered and how long that recovery is likely to take. **What should you check?** - Confirm that important business data is backed up regularly. - Protect backups against unauthorised access and modification. - Test data restoration periodically rather than assuming backups will work. - Understand how long recovery could take and which systems need to be restored first. Reviewing access permissions, keeping devices updated and testing backups are practical steps that can help reduce risk.
